UN International Yoga Day
21st June 2023
On the 21st June Amma was invited to give a speech at the Houses of Parliament event celebrating International Yoga Day. Hosted by the Indian Traditional Sciences All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) it was an event filled with wisdom and inspiration, extolling the virtues of yoga in its physical, mental, and spiritual forms.
In her video speech, Amma said ‘One does not become a yogi simply by being able to bend down and touch one’s toes. To become a yogi, we should be able to touch the hearts of people around us with our love and compassion.’
After Amma’s speech Baroness Verma, who welcomed Amma to London in 2015 spoke of the privilege of meeting Amma and described Amma’s speech as ‘words of pure wisdom’.
It was truly an honour to be present with dignitaries from around the world both online and in the Committee Room to celebrate this auspicious event. The benefits of yoga are now so widely recognised that 177 nations supported Prime Minister Modi’s proposal in 2014 to found an International Yoga Day.
